Sure, we all loved Avatar, but is 3D all smoke and no fire?

Is 3D genuine progress, giving us more depth and dimension to our visual experience, or, is it a cunning plot for manufacturers to sell more of the latest and greatest?

1080p looks phenomenal to me...why is 3D even necessary? What do you think?
